Download PDF Download Full PDF Package This paper. A short summary of this paper. Thesis english phd e Tommaso commentatori del I Sententiarum di Pietro Lombardo". Translation of some parts of P. BRAMBILLA, Unitas et Trinitas et Distinctio et Identitas. Bonaventure vs. Aquinas in comment on the first book of Sentences by Peter Thesis english phd. In the previous centuries numerous places of study flourished about a hundred kilometers from Paris: the abbey of Bec with Lanfranc and Anselm of Canterbury; the school of Laon with the famous master Anselm; the Clairvaux abbey where Bernard resided; the Chartres school with Bernard, Ivo and Gilbert de la Porrée.

Afterwards everything began to gravitate towards Paris, where the schools of Saint Victor became famous, established by William of Champeaux and flourished with Hugo and Richard; Sainte-Geneviève; Saint-Germain-des-Prés; the cathedral school of Notre-Dame, where Peter Lombard and Praepositinus from Cremona taught; Peter Abelard juggled among them, shining, thesis english phd.

The aggregation of masters and schools led to the birth of the University, which saw masters like William of Auxerre, Alexander of Hales, Albert the Great, just to name a few. A young man thesis english phd to study thesis english phd in Paris, in the autumn offor the start of a new academic year, thesis english phd, can choose among 12 different schools of theology at the University, with as many teachers1.

Two masters of Italian origin teach within a few hundred meters of each other2. The first was a Franciscan, Bonaventure from Bagnoregio, who begins his third year of teaching in the convent of the Minors, thesis english phd. The second is Friar Thomas Aquinas, of the Order of Preachers, master regent of the chair for foreigners in the convent of Saint- Jacques, close to the homonymous door on the street of the same name.

It begins the first thesis english phd many years spent teaching theology as a master4. Chapter I §1. Soon, however, their reputation as thesis english phd will surpass every aspect of ecclesial politics; in particular, their Trinitarian doctrine will make a notable contribution to Western theology, thesis english phd.

Purpose and object of the thesis The present research work aims to instruct a comparison between the Trinitarian perspectives of Thomas Aquinas and Bonaventure of Bagnoregio starting from their Comments on the Sentences of Maestro Peter Lombard. Attention will be focused on the theology of the immanent Trinity Book I, d. They commented entirely on the four books of the Sentences during their academic career at the University of Paris, with the aim of obtaining the licentia ubique docendi.

In the first book of the Sentences of Peter Lombard, and therefore also in the relative Comments, there is a real trinitarian treatise. Their writing, far from being merely a simple exposition or explanation of some aspects of the considered text, reveals itself as a real work of theological elaboration. In the illustration and comparison of their thought in the Thesis english phd sphere, we want thesis english phd highlight in a particular way commonalities and differences.

In fact, the similarity of many conceptual categories used, thesis english phd, assumed by the theological tradition and reworked by the authors, will be shown. Bonaventure and Aquinas are in the context of the medieval school, in which the ratio that seeks the reasons of faith continually refers to the auctoritates, without renouncing, in conformity with them, to propose original solutions.

At the same time, we want to highlight the differences thesis english phd their thinking. The specificities and perspectives of each of the two authors will be exposed, investigating analytically the classic categories used for the Trinitarian dogma. In this way it will be possible to bring out, thesis english phd, starting from the comparison of their texts, the particularities of the theological thought of Aquinas and Bonaventure and the different terminologies used for the description of divine life thesis english phd its dynamics.

The innovative aspect in the panorama of theological research In the complex of studies on medieval theology, these two great exponents of 13th century theology have been extensively studied. It therefore seems appropriate to show two aspects of novelty thesis english phd the proposed research work: a the study of the Trinitarian of the Commentary on the Sentences and b the aspect of the comparison between the two authors.

a The first consideration concerns the focus on the Comments on the Sentences. It is easily verifiable how, in the literature, research on these authors usually focuses on some of their theological works: the Summa Theologiae for Aquinas and the Breviloquium, the Questions on the mystery of the Trinity, the Itinerarium and the Collationes in Hexaëmeron for Bonaventure.

Research work on the Commentary on the Sentences, especially for the aspect of Trinitarian theology, has rarely been undertaken. By listing the reasons for this absence of specific studies, it will also be possible to see which problems are included in the present research work. The order is established by the Master, who often chooses to introduce some topics and then develop them later in the text, sometimes on several occasions and in different places.

The result is that, thesis english phd, in the Comments of Bonaventure and Aquinas, the same theological theme is distributed in various parts of the work, making the study very difficult6. Secondly, the Comments on the Sentences are deliberately complex, deep and subtle in their arguments. The teaching candidate had to demonstrate their ability with a view to entering the teaching class.

Certainly, they represent the first theological-systematic proposal, which will often evolve thesis english phd become more precise, thesis english phd, assuming its own and sometimes different connotations. However, the text of the Commentary remains a crucial point for grasping the development of the theological thought of medieval thinkers and often also for understanding the complexity of the reasoning that allowed some synthetic choices to be made in the works of maturity.

Finally, the text of the Commentary on the Sentences has been little translated into the vernacular languages. b The second consideration on the novelty of our research thesis english phd concerns the comparison between the authors. Each of the two reveals himself as a brilliant thinker who elaborates a thorough and complex theology, especially in the Trinitarian field.

For this reason, thesis english phd, each of them is usually studied in its singularity. Rarely has it been chosen to compare their theological positions in the Trinitarian sphere; we have often limited ourselves to simply appositive descriptions, illustrating first the thought of one author and thesis english phd that of the other, or have been compared on very specific aspects The novelty of this research work aims to be the comparison of the two Trinitarian theologies, in the limit of a doctoral research.

In sight of this, the choice to concentrate the study on the Comments on the Sentences can be understood. In them the two authors are bound to the same thematic path, since they comment on the same text. In this way a comparison is possible. It aims to establish an ideal dialogue between the Franciscan and Dominican master. Francis dux et pater noster Itinerarium mentis in Deum, Prol.

Chapter I §2. We decided to read the reference works the Sentences by Peter Lombard and the two Comments in Latin in their entirety, to identify internal articulation and to study contents in the continuous reference between the three texts.

As a result of this, two aspects have been identified which highlight a different Trinitarian conceptuality and which are particularly fruitful from the point of view of a comparison. The first theme is the distinction of the divine processions. In God, in whom all is one and where three persons are distinguished, how are we to think of the divine processions of generation and of spiration as distinct from each other? The identification of the reason for the distinction thesis english phd the two immanent operations in God reveals, in our opinion, a different consideration of the divine reality.

To understand the proposal of Bonaventure and Aquinas, the prodromes of the question and some answers elaborated within Latin theology were also studied: Augustine, Peter Lombard and Richard of Saint Victor, as well as some masters of the thirteenth century. The second consistent theme that will be found in the doctoral thesis is the concept of the divine person.

The two masters do not propose a definition of the concept but build a real theology around it. Their reflection thesis english phd various aspects that are found in both authors and in particular the themes of the relationship, the origin and the bond of the divine persons with the processions.

Each author uses the thesis english phd differently to build a coherent vision in which to think the triune God, thesis english phd. The study of the theologies of the divine persons is accompanied by an in-depth study of some authors: Augustine, Boethius, some references to Gilbert de la Porrée and Peter Abelard, Peter Lombard and Richard of Saint Victor.

We have chosen to omit the in-depth study of some concepts that are more easily comparable and sometimes compared. The reader will come across some comparisons between the two ways of considering, thesis english phd, for example, the second person of the Trinity or in some considerations on the Filioque.

Nevertheless, these themes are, in the present research, only as corollaries of the two fundamental themes indicated above. Finally, we underline a theological concept often overshadowed that we have identified as fundamental in the three Trinitarian theologies, namely the concept of simplicity.

Its origins have also been highlighted in the Latin authors preceding ours. Acknowledgments My deepest thanks certainly go to Fr Sergio Paolo Bonanni, who guided me in my doctoral research. Competent, precise, punctual. A second thanks is for my Church in Milan and for my Seminary.

Many people trusted me and allowed me to live this formative journey. A third thanks goes to the Pontifical Lombard Seminary and to the confreres who shared the Roman years with me. First of all, there is a biographical paragraph with a particular setting §1. Given the wide possibility of accessing the life of Bonaventure and Aquinas, it was decided to report very briefly what is readily available elsewhere and to propose, in an original manner, a temporal and geographical comparison of the lives of the two Masters, particularly in the context of their Parisian study and teaching.

The presentation is accompanied by some diagrams and maps, proposed with the aim of facilitating the reader to acquire a synthetic look on the topic.

The biographical part is followed by a bibliographic review §2. Having to set limits to the research work and choosing to approach the original texts, we omit the reconstruction of the status quaestionis. However, the existing studies on the subject are collected and indicated, in particular those making a comparison between the Trinitarian thought of the Seraphic and that of the Angelic Doctor. The chapter closes with the presentation of the outline of the Sentences of Peter Lombard, or perhaps it would be better to say, with the interpretation that is given §3.

The text of the Sentences, in fact, organizes the contents in such a particular way that every scholar has provided a possible interpretative scheme. The proposals of some modern authors and that of the two medieval authors studied are compared.

Content of Chapter II The second chapter some theological elements and proposals influencing the 13th century theology are presented. The first author is Augustine §1. His De Trinitate stands as a milestone for Western Trinitarian theology. Moving on to the 12th century, the discussion on divine properties and persons is first considered, involving some theologians, including Peter Abelard and Gilbert de la Porrée §1.

Then the Trinitarian theology of the Sentences of Peter Lombard is presented §2.
